Winter Security Tips For Businesses

As the dark nights draw in, criminals start to crawl out of the woodwork in higher numbers than ever before. Seeing the lack of light and people around as an opportunity to go unnoticed in their pursuits, crimes such as theft, damage and antisocial behaviour become commonplace.

But there are steps you can take to protect your business. As well as reducing your insurance premiums, it will also give you peace of mind especially if you’ll be at home during the festive season.

Here are our winter security tips for businesses to tell you more.

1. Security Lighting

When someone is up to no good, the last thing they want is a beam of light exposing their motives for all to see! Security lighting is excellent for this and should be placed on the front of your building. Or at delivery points, exits etc.

Motion sensor lighting works best especially when used to enhance CCTV imagery. If the area around your business isn’t well lit, consider asking the council about adding additional street lighting. It’s also possible to add your own within your yard or driveway.

2. Upgrade Your Locks

Invest in the best locking systems for your windows and doors that you can afford. If you have people coming and going, then a keyless security door is a good option too. A great tip is to try and open your windows and doors from the outside. If they are easy to break in to, then you know they are a security risk and therefore need upgrading.

3. Window Shutters

Shop windows are a magnet for thieves because they are so easy to smash. As well as ditching single glazing, invest in some window and door shutters. For businesses in high crime areas, this is essential, though every location will benefit especially as only trusted individuals will be given the key.

4. Make Access As Difficult As Possible

Walk around your building and put yourself in the shoes of a criminal. How easy is it to gain access to the lower or upper floors? Think external staircases, pallets lying around, fencing that can be climbed etc. The fewer opportunities you can provide the better, especially as in the winter there will be far fewer people around to catch them.

5. Install CCTV

No RE:SURE blog would ever be complete without mentioning the humble CCTV! To get the most out of your system, make sure the view is not obscured and that there are no blind spots.

The winter can bring snow and freezing temperatures, which may affect even the best CCTV models. So before you clock off, ensure everything is working correctly and contact your provider if there’s a problem at the first instance.

We also have a page dedicated to CCTV monitoring for businesses which you may find helpful too.

To Sum Up

As winter brings a chill to the air, make sure your security is hotter than ever so that your business isn’t a prime target for criminals. By reviewing your current measures, addressing any weak points and installing a robust CCTV system, you will be safe in the knowledge your business is far less likely to become a victim of crime.
